Adaptive ReUse / Commercial / Institutional /

Adjacent to the City of Hanahan’s City Hall was a 1940’s era building previously used as the city hall, library, and city gym. The facility was in disrepair and contained both lead paint and asbestos. The project required a facility assessment report to determine the usefulness of the existing building as well as a programming exercise to determine the spaces necessary for the city to use the new facility as a city gym. To help reduce the gym’s impact on the environment, as well as utility costs, extensive use of natural day-lighting was incorporated into the building design to reduce the energy needs of the facility. The final design incorporated the existing metal building gymnasium structure with new facilities to house the administrative offices for the recreation department.
